From a senator to a prisoner. A hero and a martyr. A commemoration is held annually on the 21st of August, for the assassination of an imminent figure who was brave enough to lead the call for change. He was a relentless adversary during the Marcos regime. He who brought the light to the people shrouded in darkness, a true definition of patriotism- Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.

During Martial law, Marcos ordered Aquino to be arrested for falsified claims and was placed into solitary confinement. Despite being imprisoned, he was able to run for the presidential position yet lost. After years of being abroad for medical treatment, Aquino knew that when he returned back to his home country, he would face death. Ironically enough, upon landing at the airport, he was shot dead even before reaching the tarmac. Ninoy’s death ignited something inside the people. Little did they know they would be part of the start of an uprising that would later be called: the People's Power Revolution. Associated with this is the song ???????????? ???? ???????????????????????? ???????????????????????? ???????????????????? ???????????? ???????????? ???????????? ????????????????, a song by Dawn. This was used to be the welcoming song of the awaited arrival of Ninoy Aquino but to their shock, they were met with his loss instead.

“???????????? ???????????????????????????????????? ???????????? ???????????????????? ???????????????????? ????????????.” His true loyalty to our country despite the acts against him contributed to the success of the People Power in defiance of Marcos. Like Ninoy, we should remember that all our doings will affect future generations- may it be to bring success or failure.
